Define & Translate ("the Extension") is a Chrome extension that provides AI-powered contextual definitions and translations for text you select on web pages. Your privacy matters to us. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share and retain your data when you use the Extension. By using the Extension, you consent to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
1. Information Collection and Usage
Usage Information
When you use the Extension, we collect your usage information, such as language preference, the text you highlight on a web page and its surrounding text (together not exceeding 300 characters in total), in order to provide the define & translate service. The website address (excluding any query strings or personal identifiers) is solely used to validate that the Extension is operating on an appropriate page.
Personal Information
We collect the anonymous installation identifier from your Extension for usage analytics and troubleshooting, combined with your IP address for rate-limiting.
2. Information Sharing
Third-Party Service Providers
When you use the Extension, we send your usage information, such as your selected text and surrounding context to a third-party AI service provider to provide the define & translate service. It is your responsibility to ensure no personal and confidential information is selected or in the surrounding text.
Your usage information and personal information are processed by our backend service hosting provider in order to operate the Extension.
We store your personal information on a third-party cloud service to perform usage analytics and rate-limiting. No raw IP address is stored as we implement a non-reversible security measure before sharing it with the cloud service provider to protect your information privacy.
Legal Requirements
We may also disclose your information we collected when required by law, regulations, or legal process, such as a court order, subpoena, or government investigation, or when to protect the rights and safety of us or our users.
3. Information Retention
We will retain your information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected, unless a longer retention period is required by law or needed to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
Your selected text, its surrounding context and website address are used solely to process your lookup request and are not stored by us once your request is completed.
Personal information will be retained for up to 15 days to ensure we have sufficient data to analyze usage and to improve the service.
Your anonymous identifier and language preference are stored locally on your device until you uninstall the Extension or clear its browser storage.
4. Children's Privacy
The Extension is not intended for use by children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has used the Extension, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
5. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected with an updated "Last updated" date. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Continued use of the Extension after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
